The Era of the Electric Car

Times are changing folks. We can no longer look at electric cars as cute, well-meaning, prototypes built in twos or threes that will undoubtedly become some green freak's collector's item. Toyota and Honda helped plant the seed of a viable alternative to the standard internal combustion engine with their hybrid setups, namely the Prius and the Insight respectively. Heck, even GM dabbled with the EV-1 concept that it later decided was just too risky, or too dangerous to their bottom line to put into mass production.

Given the styling maybe it was smart to kill this one...
But through all the trials and tribulations of attempting to make a viable all electric car, nobody could come close to the desired range demanded by consumers. When you think about this, people demanding an electric car that goes hundreds of miles on a single charge is a little silly. The average commuter rarely drives over 40 to 60 miles per day. The need for longer range comes only when a vacation or road trip is in order. And where do we look to for that kind of range? Certainly not the failed GM prototype nor even the new Nissan Leaf or Chevy Volt. Those cars make fine commuters but as far as range, there is only one player in the game: Tesla Motors.

Tesla offers cars that are not only capable of hundreds of miles worth of range on a single charge, they also offer cars that are a blast to drive. Electric motors provide maximum torque nearly instantly after the accelerator is pressed which is why you see headlines and funny YouTube videos of a Tesla Model S, a family sedan, wiping the floor with say a Dodge Challenger Hellcat.

Tesla doesn't stop at long range on a single charge nor the oodles of power on tap. The Model S in particular comes loaded with technology. The main console features a touchscreen that controls the various functionalities of the entire car and offers a view into all the data a car guy would ever need from his ride. Does it stop there? NO. Just like your iPhone or Android smartphone, a Tesla Model S can receive updates over the air. That means it is constantly connected to Tesla HQ and if they find a way to improve the car they can beam that improvement straight into your automobile with you being none the wiser. You just benefit from the improvement automatically without any hassle or bothering to take it to a car dealership for the upgrade.

I will always be a fan of the standard internal combustion engine. I will especially always be a fan of the Wankel rotary internal combustion engine. But when you line up internal combustion automobiles next to the technological marvel that is the Tesla Model S, there is really no comparison. In nearly every category, except perhaps styling which is subjective anyway, the Tesla comes out on top. Another great thing about Tesla? They are made in the good old USA. Until the bankruptcies of the big three automakers in the US, we were considered the automotive powerhouse of the world. Tesla Motors is bringing that trophy back to the shores of the United States and I personally could not be happier. The era of the electric car is here, and if you aren't excited, you need to read the performance stats again my friend...

My Car Is Powered By Exploding Triangles

Rotary Love

How many of you readers know what a Wankel rotary engine is? Don't be shy now, raise those hands up so I can count you. Only a couple? That's fine, that's why I am writing this article: Prepare for a quick education!

Here is my 1991 Mazda RX-7 Turbo II:
I get honked at a lot... 
Take a guess as to how many cylinders this baby has. Many folks assume this little car is rocking a four cylinder engine, simply due to its size. While a 2.5 liter four banger may fit nicely in here should I want to swap engines, the truth is my car had zero cylinders and a much smaller displacement than nearly every four cylinder engine on the road today.

How can this be? Is it an electric car? Surely it is too old to have a battery that would power it for any reasonable distance. Zero cylinders? It must be magic! 

No, it isn't magic, its a 1.3 liter (1300 cc's) turbocharged rotary engine. It has two triangle shaped rotors housed in a pair of trochoidal rotor housings. These two triangles whip around a specialized elliptical shaft which then transfers the power directly to the main drive shaft. Got it? If not, here is a perfect, simple animation to help you understand how a rotary engine functions:


With the stock setup and a boost level of around 6psi, my car puts down 200 horsepower to the rear wheels. Rotary engines have the benefit of being able to rev to astronomical levels. And the higher the revs go the more power the engine produces. My particular car has a redline at 7,000 RPMs. It even has an alarm buzzer that goes off once your tachometer swings past 7k, letting you know that, while this is fun and all, shifting may be a good idea right about now. 

These motors have been around for quite awhile, but Mazda has always been the company to put them into widespread production. Starting with the Mazda Cosmo Sport in the 1960s, and most recently with the RX-8, rotaries have revved their way into the hearts of anyone whose had the pleasure of driving one.

Another benefit of rotary engines is that you can mod and tune them to your heart's desire. They are able to handle a remarkable amount of power for their size. Some 3rd generation RX-7s are able to put down 800+ horsepower by turning up the boost on their turbos (or getting larger ones), and then tuning the fuel system to handle a different gas to air mixture ratio. 

Do rotaries have a downside? Alas, yes they do. A stock rotary engine will usually make it to 120,000 miles and then blow up. The corners of the triangle shaped rotor have seals (called 'apex' seals) that can only handle so many revolutions inside the rotor housing before failing. My RX-7 made it to 118,000 miles and then, like so many other rotaries driven that far, my apex seals blew and I had to have the engine rebuilt. This is a pricey proposition for most folks, even though the engine has about one tenth of the parts that a traditional piston engine contains. Many mechanics won't touch rotaries because the rebuilding process is so much different than what they are used to. Many people simply send the car to the junkyard to rot or replace the rotary engines with a V8 or other piston engine. While wanting a piston engine with generally better reliability in the long run is understandable, there is still nothing quite like a Wankel.

So I challenge my rotary loving brothers and sisters to keep the dream alive! Don't sully your car's reputation by replacing a blown Wankel engine with a piston engine. That way you can chuckle to yourself at Jiffy Lube when the oil change man asks you how many cylinders your engine has, and reply: "Oh my car has no cylinders. My car is powered by exploding triangles."

Their faces will be priceless.

The Original Four Door Porsche

Ever wondered what the Porsche Panamera would have looked like if it had been conceived, designed, and built during the 1960s? 

Me neither, but that doesn’t mean that a one of a kind ancestor to the Panamera wasn’t built. Leave it to Motorheads to cut a Porsche 911 in half and slap it back together with an extra pair of seats and room to spare.

In 1968, the aforementioned Motorheads Dick Troutman and Tom Barnes decided that two seats were simply not enough for a 911. Their solution? Cut the car in half, design new body panels and sheet metal to accommodate the longer wheelbase, and then weld and rivet it all back together.

The result is a strange 911 that you may not even take a second look at unless you got close. Then you would see that this car is sporting suicide doors hinged at the rear and it is 21 inches longer than its 2 seated 911 brethren. It was perfectly drivable and, in my opinion, doesn’t look half bad:

I think the impressive part of this whole endeavor is the amount of room they were able to add to the original frame. 21 inches gave any rear seated passengers ample leg room. That’s a far cry from today’s 911s. They are technically four-seaters, but good luck getting anything larger than a small child or a bag of groceries back there. It makes one wonder why they even bother sticking seats into that cramped space.

Anyway, I thought this was a cool article. And I am very impressed with the final result. It’s amazing to think that this was done by only two guys in a garage. Motor heads come up with some crazy stuff don’t they?

Lotus: Go-Karts On Steroids.

I have always been an admirer of Lotus cars. Their dedication to making light and agile automobiles is refreshing, especially when most American made autos are looking more and more bloated. I understand the attractive aspect of a big, bad, drag strip monster like the new Ford Mustang GT and the Dodge Challenger Hellcat, but take one of those into a windy mountain road and all that weight makes things a bit tricky. And with V8s with oodles of torque on tap may send you into the gravel if you aren’t careful. 

Anyway, enough about American cars, back to the Lotus.

Have a look at this:

Uhhhhh. Windshield? NOPE!


That, dear readers, is the Lotus 311: A windshield-less, single seater, weighing less than 2000 pounds and sporting an engine with nearly 400 pound-feet of torque on tap. Let that sink in for a minute. With an average sized person you are talking about just over 2100 pounds of car and driver with a zero to 60 mph time of under 3 seconds. That is a rocket. That is motorcycle territory.
And for an overweight go-kart, the Lotus 311 still has pretty decent styling! I look at this thing and I immediately think “Hot Wheels”. And boy howdy thats an understatement. This is a track car pure and simple, as if the lack of a roof said anything different. All that is between you and the road is an aluminum chassis on one side, and a roll bar on the other. Plus, for the road version of the 311 anyway, the top speed is 180 mph. I think most people would be satisfied with far less, but leave it to Lotus to crank it to 11. I bet it’s good on gas too, something which most supercars aren’t. And that’s just what this is: A supercar. Small, sure, but just as fast as your Ferrari’s and Lamborghini’s, at least until the 400+ pounds of downforce the aerodynamics generate limit the top end. But really, who needs to go 200+ miles an hour? Nobody. Nobody needs to. Sorry Bugatti, I hear you guys are trying to make a nearly 300mph car, but unless I am at the Bonneville salt flats, I am never going that fast. 

The downside? Being a limited production model. That means a price tag of about $130,000 and only 311 to choose from. I bet they are already snatched up, but maybe I can find a second hand one in a couple years for cheap. One can dream!

The Dirty Car Artist

Usually I post news items and photos/videos from the automotive industry, but every once in awhile I feel the need explore new avenues (no pun intended). 

Today I happened upon this article featuring the work of Scott Wade, also known as the ‘Dirty Car Artist’. His canvas is a window and his tools are dust and dirt. We have all probably written ‘WASH ME’ on a dusty car. Mr. Wade, however, is on another level:

Living in Texas on a dirt and gravel road, Scott Wade developed this unique art style simply by doodling in the dirt that eventually covered his cars. Over the years he refined this skill, even recreating some classic drawings/paintings while also creating his own original art. Check out this M.C. Escher on the rear window of a Nissan Versa:

Because he can.
I don’t know about you, but to me that is incredible. The detail and precision required to do something like this is astounding. I would rather have this on my car than have a clean car! Granted it would make backing up a bit tricky but that’s what side mirrors and luck are for, pedestrians beware.

Keeping your car clean is a good habit to get into, but if you have a dusty ride, take it to Scott Wade and turn your vehicle into a rolling piece of art. He will even throw dirt on your car for you, so really there is no excuse!

Turbo Porsche's? Sign Me Up!

Tears of Joy...

For anyone who has even loosely followed this blog, you have to realize that I have a heavy bais towards Porsche automobiles. They are my favorite cars of all time, followed very closely by anything that is rotary powered. Why? I don't really have a reason. I can always remember loving them for sticking the engine in such a ludicrous and, as it turns out with turbos, dangerous place. When your Porsche 930 turbo decides to boost in the middle of a sharp turn, you may as well let go of the wheel and let it happen as your back end breaks loose and you spin round about a couple times. Hopefully that's all that will happen, but those 930s have a dicey reputation...

Porsche thankfully has refined it's turbo cars so that there isn't as much danger in owning one. And technology such as traction control and all wheel drive help to keep drivers of all skills on the road. So for those who love the feeling of boost as it slams you back in your seat, this news will please you all: Porsche is bringing turbo engines to the Boxster and the Cayman!

GIVE ME BOOOOOOOST!

According to the report, the engines in the Boxster and Cayman models will be turbo powered flat fours making anywhere from 240 - 370 hp, replacing the normally aspirated flat sixes that grace the current mid-engined lineup. The only lineup of Boxsters and Caymans that will keep the flat six engines (supposedly) are the top of the line, special edition GT4 models, although that information is far from confirmed. 

Go Go Gadget Boost!
Being mid-engined, the Porsche Boxster and Cayman lineup are ideal for the turbo setup. Balance is key when it comes to cornering and maneuverability on the track, and these two models sport nearly perfect 50/50 balance from front to back. A kick in of boost at the apex of a turn will still be lesss than ideal, but the modern traction and stability control that both models will no doubt sport will help to minimize instances of the back end going where it pleases instead of where you want it to. As an owner of a turbo auto ('91 Mazda RX7 Turbo), I can appreciate the necessity of this technology, even though it may not be nearly as fun or daring.

Bugatti's 288MPH Hypercar!

The Bugatti Chiron

Bugatti has shown what the future holds with its unveiling of the Chiron: a quadruple turbocharged W-16 engine that supposedly delivers 1,500hp!! This thing will most likely shred through tires like they were tissue paper. 

As for how it looks, well you be the judge:

It's still a work in progress folks so don't judge too harshly! I haven't ever really been a fan of Bugatti styling (that grill style must be awful to design around) but you gotta hand it to them for pushing the limit on automotive technology! This thing is supposedly going to reach nearly 300mph! Put wings on it and call it a personal jet. At that speed you'd better hope  you don't hit a speed bump or pothole.

The Ferrari Van

So normally we are all used to Ferrari's being the apex exotic car manufacturer. I mean come on, these designs are sexy, sporty, and just oozing with class. For instance we are used to


 The Ferrari Daytona:


And the gorgeous Ferrari Dino:



There is just simply no other car manufacturer with as many timeless car models as Ferrari. Even with their newer, more creative ventures, such as the Ferrari FF (Beow) they have kept up with a standard that is so out of reach for so many.



Now, however, it seems Ferrari is running out of challenges. There have been talks of a Ferrari SUV in the works for some time now, but nothing solid has come fro our friends of the Prancing Ponu.

While it is not clear when this is planning to be released, one thing is: Unfortunately the Ferrari Van will not be gracing the world's roadways anytime soon (or ever). I was just tired, saw this picture, and had a good laugh. That being said, there ARE plans for Ferrari to build an SUV, following first Porsche and now Lamborghini into that segment. Here's to hoping Ferrari builds the sexiest SUV the world has ever seen!

I Am a Sucker for Rotary Cars

I will try and find a video of this thing in action too because it sounds like a complete monster! It's a classic and hopefully Mazda comes out with another rotary machine soon! (Wishful thinking I know, plans keep being pushed back but who knows what the future holds!)

I am a Huge fan of the Ford GT, but I can't quite understand why they limited it's potential so much by only putting a V-6 in there. There is only so much power, and so much boost, you can put into an engine before you just start blowing them up!


That being said, it does look dead sexy, so maybe other racers will be distracted by its beauty enough for it to move up a couple places. I mean just look at this thing:

Maybe that twin-turbo 6 does have what it takes after all...

The Electric Car to Rule Them All


Introducing the Zombie 222; The Mustang That Just Says 'NO' to Gasoline.

Oh, and it is BONKERS fast.





This classic 1968 Mustang has received an electric makeover from Mitch Medford and electric drag racer John Wayland. The two turned the car into something that easily bests the Tesla Model S P85D on the track.

They call it the Zombie 222, and it looks like it’s only a lightly modified Mustang fastback. Open the hood, though, and you see the changes are much deeper. The stock V8 engine has been replaced by two electric motors rated at a total 440 volts. They’re linked to a high-capacity battery pack designed for track driving. This all sends over 800 horsepower and 1,800 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels. Here is another shot:

Automatically Save Car News!

Never Miss A Car & Driver Article Again.


Using the magic of the Internet and a little site called ifttt.com, I have created a recipe that should put a smile on the face of the car guy who just can't get enough Car and Driver. 

Essentially, if you have a Pocket Reader account (which I recommend getting, it's good for saving links/articles), you can input your information into this "recipe" and all Car and Driver articles that are sent through their RSS feed will get saved to your Pocket account for later reading. Usually that's the vast majority of the news they cover so you can be sure you won't miss out on anything! And all the updating happens in real-time, IFTTT runs their recipes every 5-15 minutes, so your Pocket account will be chock full of piping hot C&D reviews, photos, videos, etc, etc...

Just click on the picture to be taken to IFTTT and they will get you set up straight away!


You do have to get an IFTTT account if you don't already have one. It's simple to set up and after you have it ready you can connect all sorts of online resources to automate your world, just as I have automated this automotive newsreel. 

So let's get moving MotorHeads! Stay on the cutting edge of car news!
